    Examining the Relationship Between Math Scores and English Language Proficiency

    Multiple studies propose that English proficiency dictates English language learners’ (ELLs) performances on mathematics assessments. The current study investigates the predictive power of English proficiency on mathematics scores, while controlling for gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and grade level among ELLs at a south Florida elementary school. Krashen’s theory of comprehensible input as a precursor to second language acquisition provides the framework for this quantitative, correlation study. Mathematics scores from the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test for Grade 3–5 ELLs (N = 177) were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Analysis reveals English proficiency as a statistically significant predictor of mathematics scores. Mathematics scores increase simultaneously with English proficiency but inversely with grade level. Grade level moderates the influence of English proficiency on mathematics scores. Gender and SES have no significant moderating influence

    Social Mobility Through Mathematics Proficiency for English Language Learners

    College admission is contingent upon students’ high school performances, especially mathematics proficiency that is crucial in qualifying for the projected science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professions of the future. This paper reviews some concerns that hinder the efforts of English language learners (ELLs), often the children of immigrants, to achieve social mobility through a college education. ELLs consistently fail to achieve proficiency on mathematics assessments as measured by the National Assessment for Educational Progress and local assessments such as the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Consequently, many ELLs do not attend college. The article examines implications for educators and policymakers for resolving some of the issues that impede transforming ELLs into academic and societal achievers. Actions taken by educators and policymakers might assist ELLs in navigating the challenges encountered in their pursuit of a college education

    A Smart Single-Chip Micro-Hotplate-Based Gas Sensor System in CMOS-Technology

    This paper presents a monolithic chemical gas sensor system fabricated in industrial CMOS-technology combined with post-CMOS micromachining. The system comprises metal-oxide-covered (SnO2) micro-hotplates and the necessary driving and signal-conditioning circuitry. The SnO2 sensitive layer is operated at temperatures between 200 and 350°C. The on-chip temperature controller regulates the temperature of the membrane up to 350°C with a resolution of 0.5°C. A special heater-design was developed in order to achieve membrane temperatures up to 350°C with 5 V supply voltage. The heater design also ensures a homogeneous temperature distribution over the heated area of the hotplate (1-2% maximum temperature fluctuation). Temperature sensors, on- and off-membrane (near the circuitry), show an excellent thermal isolation between the heated membrane area and the circuitry-area on the bulk chip (chip temperature rises by max 6°C at 350°C membrane temperature). A logarithmic converter was included to measuring the SnO2 resistance variation upon gas exposure over a range of four orders of magnitude. An Analog Hardware Description Language (AHDL) model of the membrane was developed to enable the simulations of the complete microsystem.     In European nations, the aging of the workforce is a major issue which is increasingly addressed both in national and organizational policies in order to sustain older workers' employability and to encourage longer working lives. Particularly older workers' employability can be viewed an important issue as this has the potential to motivate them for their work and change their intention to retire. Based on lifespan development theories and Van der Heijden's ‘employability enhancement model’, this paper develops and tests an age-moderated mediation model (which refers to the processes that we want to test in this model), linking older workers' (55 years old and over) perceptions of job support for learning (job-related factor) and perceptions of negative age stereotypes on productivity (organizational factor), on the one hand, and their intention to retire, on the other hand, via their participation in employability enhancing activities, being the mediator in our model. A total of 2,082 workers aged 55 years and above were included in the analyses. Results revealed that the two proposed relationships between the predictors and intention to retire were mediated by participation in employability enhancing activities, reflecting two mechanisms through which work context affects intention to retire (namely ‘a gain spiral and a loss spiral’). Multi-Group SEM analyses, distinguishing between two age groups (55–60 and 61–65 years old), revealed different paths for the two distinguished groups of older workers. Employability mediated the relationship between perceptions of job support for learning and intention to retire in both age groups, whereas it only mediated the relationship between perceptions of negative age stereotypes and intention to retire in the 55–60 group. From our empirical study, we may conclude that employability is an important factor in the light of older workers' intention to retire. In order to motivate this category of workers to participate in employability enhancing activities and to work longer, negative age stereotypes need to be combated. In addition, creating job support for learning over the lifespan is also an important HR practice to be implemented in nowadays' working life

    Software Startups -- A Research Agenda

    Software startup companies develop innovative, software-intensive products within limited time frames and with few resources, searching for sustainable and scalable business models. Software startups are quite distinct from traditional mature software companies, but also from micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises, introducing new challenges relevant for software engineering research. This paper's research agenda focuses on software engineering in startups, identifying, in particular, 70+ research questions in the areas of supporting startup engineering activities, startup evolution models and patterns, ecosystems and innovation hubs, human aspects in software startups, applying startup concepts in non-startup environments, and methodologies and theories for startup research. We connect and motivate this research agenda with past studies in software startup research, while pointing out possible future directions. While all authors of this research agenda have their main background in Software Engineering or Computer Science, their interest in software startups broadens the perspective to the challenges, but also to the opportunities that emerge from multi-disciplinary research. Our audience is therefore primarily software engineering researchers, even though we aim at stimulating collaborations and research that crosses disciplinary boundaries. We believe that with this research agenda we cover a wide spectrum of the software startup industry current needs

    Memory for medication side effects in younger and older adults: the role of subjective and objective importance

    Older adults often experience memory impairments, but can sometimes use selective processing and schematic support to remember important information. The current experiments investigate to what degree younger and healthy older adults remember medication side effects that were subjectively or objectively important to remember. Participants studied a list of common side effects, and rated how negative these effects were if they were to experience them, and were then given a free recall test. In Experiment 1, the severity of the side effects ranged from mild (e.g., itching) to severe (e.g., stroke), and in Experiment 2, certain side effects were indicated as critical to remember (i.e., “contact your doctor if you experience this”). There were no age differences in terms of free recall of the side effects, and older adults remembered more severe side effects relative to mild effects. However, older adults were less likely to recognize critical side effects on a later recognition test, relative to younger adults. The findings suggest that older adults can selectively remember medication side effects, but have difficulty identifying familiar but potentially critical side effects, and this has implications for monitoring medication use in older age

    From Craft to Nature: The Emergence of Natural Teleology

    A teleological explanation is an explanation in terms of an end or a purpose. So saying that ‘X came about for the sake of Y’ is a teleological account of X. It is a striking feature of ancient Greek philosophy that many thinkers accepted that the world should be explained in this way. However, before Aristotle, teleological explanations of the cosmos were generally based on the idea that it had been created by a divine intelligence. If an intelligent power made the world, then it makes sense that it did so with a purpose in mind, so grasping this purpose will help us understand the world. This is the pattern of teleological explanation that we find in the Presocratics and in Plato. However, with Aristotle teleology underwent a change: instead of thinking that the ends were explanatory because a mind had sought to bring them about, Aristotle took the ends to operate in natural beings independently of the efforts of any creative intelligence. Indeed, he thought that his predecessors had failed to understand what was distinctive of nature, namely, that its ends work from the inside of natural beings themselves

    Aristotle on the Matter for Birth, Life, and the Elements

    This essay considers three case studies of Aristotle’s use of matter, drawn from three different scientific contexts: menstrual fluid as the matter of animal generation in the Generation of Animals, the living body as matter of an organism in Aristotle’s On the Soul (De Anima), and the matter of elemental transformation in Generation and Corruption. I argue that Aristotle conceives of matter differently in these treatises (1) because of the different sorts of changes under consideration, and (2) because sometimes he is considering the matter for one specific change, and sometimes the matter for all of a thing’s natural changes. My account allows me to explain some of the strange features that Aristotle ascribes to the matter for elemental transformation in Generation and Corruption II. These features were interpreted by later commentators as general features of all matter. I argue that they are a result of the specific way that Aristotle thinks about the transmutation of the elements
